The University of Freiburg (colloquially German: University Freiburg), officially the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg (German: Albert-Ludwig-University Freiburg), is a public research university located in Freiburg in Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The university was founded in 1457 by the Habsburg dynasty as the second university in Austrian-Habsburg territory after the University of Vienna. Today, Freiburg is the fifth-oldest university in Germany, with a long tradition of teaching the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences and technology and enjoys a high academic reputation both nationally and internationally. The university is made up of 11 faculties and attracts students from across Germany as well as from over 120 other countries. Foreign students constitute about 18.2% of total student numbers.
The University of Freiburg is part of a global network encompassing over 300 partnerships with prestigious higher education institutions on all five continents. In the 2015/16 winter semester more than 4000 international students from around 130 countries were matriculated at the university more than ever before.

Application process and the cost of tuition.
The academic year is divided into semesters. The tuition fees for bachelor’s programs rarely exceed 1000 USD. A year of master’s studies will cost you less than 1000 USD. In addition to full time programs, the university also offers a wide range of online courses.

University of Freiburg is classified as a large university with more than 23,000 concurrent students. The university accepts both local and foreign students. The ratio is 1 foreign student to 7 local ones. To ensure that the quality of education stays high the university has an academic staff consisting of more than 2000 specialists. The majority of academic staff at University of Freiburg consists of foreign specialists. University of Freiburg has exchange agreements with many educational institutions.
Student’s Residence
The Student Services Freiburg (Studierendenwerk SWFR) offers rooms in various student residences. The rooms are always rented out for a whole semester (winter semester: October 1 to March 31, summer semester: April 1 to September 30). Applications are submitted online.
Program rooms are rooms in student residences that are only available for certain study programmes or other international students. These rooms are fully furnished and are rented out for one or at most two semesters.
